Here is where all the information can be found on the Sports and Societies John’s has to offer. If you would like to find out fixtures or results they can be found on the Team Durham website (http://www.teamdurham.com) or on the board in the TV Room in college. Down the left-hand side there is a full list of our sports teams from Badminton to Ultimate Frisbee. Our Societies span Community Outreach and the Arts. Each of the pages is kept up-to-date by the captains and presidents, so contact them if there are any questions not answered by what they have written. If you have any questions on the more general aspect of Sports and Societies within John’s then feel free to contact James Woolley, or check the Sports and Societies Officer profile.
Sport
Despite being the second smallest college, John’s competes in some of the top leagues against other colleges, which are more than double our size. Our mixed lacrosse and squash teams are the best in the uni, and many of our other teams are highly successful (with a few, errrrrrr, exceptions...but no matter). The main appeal of collegiate sport is that anyone can join in. It doesn’t matter how good you are, there’s definitely a team for you! You can join as many teams as you like, the choice is yours. To get involved, just go along to Fresher’s Fair in Fresher’s Week, where all the sports captains will be, and sign up to anything you like.
During the year there are loads of great sport events to get involved in too. Team-John’s is the fantastically fun competitive relay race between all the different John’s sports teams. Oh yeah, and it takes place between the various college bars! John’s-Chad’s Day, or as Chad’s knows it, ‘Make John’s Feel Better About Themselves Day’, is the sports day to end all sports days with the victors winning the coveted Wilkinson-Cassidy trophy (John’s hasn’t lost it yet!)
Societies
Societies offer a great way to get involved in university life on collegiate and university level. No matter who you are or what you enjoy, there is bound to be a society for you. Whether you’re a huge fan of ‘Neighbours’, or a particularly good tenor, you’re sure to find something you enjoy. Getting involved in societies is fantastically rewarding. You get to meet new people, relax and socialise with those who share similar interests. I couldn’t urge you more to get involved!
If you want any further information please e-mail James Woolley at johns.sportsoc@dur.ac.uk

Hello and welcome to John's Badminton!
Despite the small size of our college, the badminton team regularly has up to 20 people playing on a Sunday afternoon at Freeman's Quay. This year, in addition to the men's team (who were oh so close to promotion) there is also going to be a female team meaning that you don't just have to play recreationally if you don't want to.
However, all is good in the John's Badminton world and if you want to play, competitively or not, just get in contact with me, Matthew Swift at m.j.swift@dur.ac.uk and I can give you the details.

St John’s Women’s Football is a small, friendly club – we try our best and enjoy playing competitively, especially against the much bigger colleges. Equally, however, we like to have a laugh. Two years ago, we lifted a trophy. Last year…we didn’t…BUT all the more reason to try again this year! Most team members have never played football before uni, so don’t worry if you’ve never touched a ball, or if your football knowledge is simply David Beckham. Come and join us on a Wednesday afternoon for some healthy exercise and some fun. Whether you have played before (BRILLIANT), or whether you fancy trying something new (FANTASTIC), we will be happy to see you!
For info about the men's or women's hockey team see the menu on the left.

Captain of the Men ’s Hockey Club is a small but mighty contingent which competes in the Premiership of the college league, where we enjoy a fairly competitive level of hockey (though it is still largely social
). There is also a knockout competition each year where we try and cause as much upset as possible by defeating one of the b igger colleges. We also form a mixed team for John’s-Chad’s day at the end of the year, and enter the college Festival of Sport. We have games once a week and train once a week. If you’ve got ANY hockey experience please consider joining the club – we are in serious need of numbers!

According to Wikipedia, lacrosse is “a team sport of Native American origin played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet called a crosse or lacrosse stick”. What Wikipedia doesn’t tell you, however, is that lacrosse is one of the coolest and most exciting games that has ever been played, and that it’s kind of a big thing at John’s. We have epic socials and some of the fittest stash in the university. Sound good so far? We are also one of the college’s largest and most successful clubs (league champions for the past two years). The best part, however, is that no playing experience is needed! Get involved. You won’t regret it.

The last two years have seen John's Squash soar! We have a male team and a female team who punch miles above their weight. For one of the smallest colleges we always do incredibly well on the squash circuit. Last year paralleled the year before which saw us place 2nd in the college premiership loosing to Hatfield both years in full 5 game finals. However, we are not sulking, we are not fearful but instead are hungry for the title! We want to show the world (...of Durham at least) that we deserve the victory! But - Squash at John's is not all about the competition! We have a reputation for the team with the best moral because we hold incredible socials, never turn down the fun of college formal and douce ourselves with infamous pasta parties, drinking parties and parties we label only as "X" - you'll have to wait and see. We also hold regular training sessions and friendlies so it doesn't matter if you've played before or not, there'll be something for you. Get involved!
Captain: Callum Cheatle

The best sport in John's! We train every wednesday and play competitively every weekend. If you want to get involved with a friendly team in a sport that's easy to learn and fun to play, feel free to get involved!

The St John's branch of Amnesty is a friendly and passionate society within college. It really gives its members (and the college as a whole) a chance to make a difference to the individual lives of persecuted people all over the world. We look at Amnesty campaigns from England to China and would love as much support and as many ideas as possible!

Durham Student Theatre (the overarching body for theatre at Durham University) is made up of a number of individual theatre companies. The Bailey Theatre Company is run by Johnians and has one of the best reputations for producing amazing theatre in the whole of Durham! Recent shows have been awarded 5* reviews and always sell ver well. These have included 'The Crucible', '4:48 Psychosis', 'Spring Awakening', 'After the End' and 'Dr. Faustus' which also won the award for Best Play at the Durham Oscars. We also co-took a new production 'Who's Afraid of the Brothers Grimm?' to the Edinburgh Festival which won a very rare 'Sell-Out Award' and received fantastic reviews.
The current exec is made up of Callum Cheatle (also Durham Student Theatre's Festivals Secretary), Greg Silverman (also Durham Student Theatre's treasurer), Tasha Cowley and Clare Bliss. They are always on hand if you have any questions about BTC or want to get involved. In 2010/2011 we want to continue and develop the incredible work that BTC is producing and for this we need your help! We need you to get involved in acting, directing, producing, stage management, the technical side, costume, props - whatever suits your interests! There's something here for you no-matter what you enjoy doing! Get involved in the exec, as a decicated member, as a dedicated audience member or in any capability that you want. Next year we are planning a separate production for each term, the end of year Summer Shakespeare (a fun event for all of collage held on Linton Lawn) and many socials and other events. Get involved in Johns' best society!

Additional requirements specific to the role are to organise exec meetings, write minutes of each meeting and circulate them to the rest of the exec and use the minutes as a record of decisions made and tasks given to members. The Secretary should also liaise with other members of the exec to check that they are happy with any tasks that they are given and to offer any further assistance.

Chapel Choir Director: Shaun Turnbull shaun.turnbull@durham.ac.uk
College Choir Director: Henry Sleath h.g.sleath@dur.ac.uk
The auditioned choral scholars of the chapel choir sing the office of Evensong every Wednesday in the chapel, alongside other services such as the End of Term Cathedral services. They are one of the best choirs in the University and sing to an extremely high standard. Auditions are held at the start of Michaelmas Term so you need to apply very soon after you arrive.
“The St. John’s College Choir” is College’s non-auditioned choir, and as such has members ranging from College choral scholars, who enjoy singing different repertoire from their usual fare to a good standard, through to people who’ve never sung before and want to try their hand at it. In the previous two years, the choir has enjoyed great success within college; notable highlights include a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in

Durham Cathedral as part of the College’s centenary celebrations (see picture), as well as annual participation in the Carol Service, in Durham Cathedral and St. Oswald’s Church. The choir has also performed at events such as the Pete Wake fundraising concert in academic year 2009/10, as one of a number of ensembles to take part. The choir is open to all members of college – undergraduates, postgraduates, staff & members of Cranmer Hall; if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me – I’d love to hear from you.
Henry Sleath, Director – h.g.sleath@dur.ac.uk
You might guess that there are quite a few Christians in John’s. The Christian Union is a place where we can all meet together, supporting and encouraging each other. You don’t have to be a Christian to come along, and you don’t have to come along if you are a Christian - hopefully any Christian will feel a part of the union of Christians regardless of level of activity.
So the main meeting is on a Monday night. We are linked to the whole University Christian Union (DICCU) - a bit like a subsidiary. It’s all inter-denominational and hopefully it’s all about Jesus. Feel free to email either of the two reps that like to pretend like we’re in charge.

The College Orchestra has not run for a number of years, mainly due to the fact that, as one of the smallest colleges in Durham, we have not had sufficient numbers to make it viable. This does not mean, however, that it is not going to run this year! There will be an orchestra sign-up sheet at the Freshers’ Fair, on the same table as the College Choir sign-up, which will ask for your name, contact details and instruments – following the Fair, a decision will be made as to whether an orchestra (or other ensemble!) is viable. If you have any questions about the orchestra or choir, please do feel free to contact me:
