Sports & Societies

The JHJCR has lots of sports teams and societies that you may join. The sports team compete between different colleges giving you the freedom of playing the sports you want to at a level that's cloeset to your own.

Along with the sports teams their are societies that you may also join for people that have simalar interests to you; there's everything from the "Neighbours Society" to the "Ladies Group". And just in the outlandish case that there isn't a society to fill your every need, you can start your own.

Sports

I’m Hannah Wells, John’s Sports Office 2009-10.

I will be going into my third year at John’s, finishing my BA in Sport. I’m a netballer by trade, playing for the uni but I love pretty much any sport, to an extreme that somehow I decided rowing for johns and getting up a 6am would be fun. Of course it is and I’m hooked for life! John’s has a very proud sporting tradition, competing to a high level and offering opportunities in all major games and quite a few minor ones, considering its size.  As sports officer my job is to maintain this high profile encouraging as many people as possible to take part at whatever level, whether that’s competitive or just for fun.  I’m also John’s representative to the Durham University Athletics Union (DUAU) when needs be and have the lovely responsibility of keeping all our team captains in check and in the know. However one of my most important tasks is to help organise the sporting extravaganzas and ego boosting “John’s Chad’s Day”, where we play and beat St Chad’s College (who are actually quite good and very friendly) at a whole host of sports over 2 days after exams.  But if you have any sport related questions please direct my way I shall only be too please to help. johns.sports@durham.ac.uk

Societies

Hi, I’m Fran and I’m your St. John’s College Societies Officer for the forthcoming year!

I’m currently Second Year studying Combined Social Sciences and within university combine being part of Instep dance troupe with a steadfast commitment to all things John’s! Despite being a small college, John’s does a great job at providing societies for a whole range of passions, talents and interests to enable you to get involved in college life. Over the last year, John’s societies have flourished and the foundation of the John’s Dance Society, a Ski and Snowboard Society and a branch of Amnesty International has given even more breadth to the scopes of interests of college members. We are now beginning to offer the same opportunities as the larger colleges in terms of society membership, and I want to promote the establishment of even more societies so that everyone has something to get involved with. We are one of only a few colleges not to have a Cheerleading Society and some of our television-related societies are in much need of reinvigoration! And that’s where my job comes in...supporting existing societies through extra promotion within college, making setting up a society a simple, pain-free experience and liaising between societies and the JCR exec so that societies are sufficiently supported within college. Furthermore, the new Colours System means that College is keen to recognise the dedication, success and commitment of society members which will hopefully encourage a flurry of new societies! I really believe that John’s should be a place where everyone should have an outlet to express themselves whether it be through sport, drama or charitable pursuits.

So have a look through the list on the right at what's on offer and feel free to get in touch with any of the society presidents to find out more. If you’re interested in setting up a society of your own then please contact me and I’ll be happy to help! Look out for the societies board situated in the Bailey Room which will be revamped soon. In the meantime, GET INVOLVED!

Amnesty International

The St John's branch of Amnesty is a friendly and passionate society within college. It really gives its members (and the college as a whole) a chance to make a difference to the individual lives of persecuted people all over the world. We look at Amnesty campaigns from England to China and would love as much support and as many ideas as possible! We meet as often as we can and are planning many socials/bar crawls/events etc so get involved and save the human!

Bailey Theatre Company

The Bailey Theatre Company (BTC) is St John’s college Theatre Company. We are completely run by John’s students, although we often audition from the whole university. Over the past few years we have produced a range of high quality productions in Leech Hall, the Chapel and the Assembly Rooms and have gained a university-wide reputation as one of the University’s leading theatre companies. In the past year we have won Best Play for our production of Dr Faustus and two Johnians scooped the Best Actor and Actress awards at this year’s Durham Summer ShakespeareDrama Festival.

We seek to encourage any form of drama, be it serious Greek tragedy or light-hearted comedy so if you’re interested in putting on a production please get in touch with any member of the exec.

We also seek to encourage participation in the backstage elements of theatre. So if you’re interested in hair, make-up, costumes, props, stage managing, producing, lighting, sound or set building get in touch and we can help point you in the right direction.

On this page you will find details of who is on the exec and what their job is. If you fancy running for one of the positions please feel free to get in touch with whoever is currently doing it. You will also find details of past productions with links to reviews.

The BTC Exec

SecretaryJessica Orr (j.e.orr@dur.ac.uk)

Additional requirements specific to the role are to organise exec meetings, write minutes of each meeting and circulate them to the rest of the exec and use the minutes as a record of decisions made and tasks given to members. The Secretary should also liaise with other members of the exec to check that they are happy with any tasks that they are given and to offer any further assistance.

Treasurer - Greg Silverman

Chapel Choir

The auditioned choral scholars of the chapel choir sing the office of Evensong every Wednesday in the chapel, alongside other services such as the End of Term Cathedral services. They are one of the best choirs in the University and sing to an extremely high standard. Auditions are held at the start of Michaelmas Term so you need to apply very soon after you arrive.

Martin Clarke m.v.clarke@dur.ac.uk

Choir

After a year of absence, the St. John’s College Choir has been resurrected and is thriving.  Rehearsals are held at present on Saturday evenings at six thirty for an hour, in various locations around college, including the Chapel, if the organ is required.
The Choir is non-auditioned, and as such we have members who’ve never sung before and want to do so in a relaxed environment, all the way up to College Choral Scholars who enjoy singing some easier works than their usual fare, to a good standard.
The music scene at John’s means that there is always something for the Choir to work towards – in the Michaelmas term this year, the College Choir amalgamated with the Chapel Choir and members of Cranmer Hall to form “The St. John’s College Great Choir” in order to sing for the College Carol service, in the Cathedral, under the direction of Ted Moore (Conductor of the College Choir).  This service was a great success and the College Choir hopes to perform at least once a term, either in concert or during services.  The Choir’s very exciting Epiphany project is a performance of Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” (under the direction of Ted Moore), and “Five Negro Spirituals” (under the direction of Mr. George Richford, Director of Music at St. John’s), in the Cathedral as part of the college-wide centenary celebrations.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the College Choir – it would be great to hear from any prospective members!

Ted Moore – e.p.moore@durham.ac.uk

Christian Union (CU)

You might guess that there are quite a few Christians in John’s. The Christian Union is a place where we can all meet together, supporting and encouraging each other. You don’t have to be a Christian to come along, and you don’t have to come along if you are a Christian - hopefully any Christian will feel a part of the union of Christians regardless of level of activity.

So the main meeting is on a Monday night. We are linked to the whole University Christian Union (DICCU) - a bit like a subsidiary. It’s all inter-denominational and hopefully it’s all about Jesus. Feel free to email either of the two reps that like to pretend like we’re in charge.

Dance

More information about this society will come up soon.

In the meantime you can contact Melissa Charters for more information at melissa.charters@dur.ac.uk.

Daylight Robbery

Perhaps the smallest society in John's is Daylight Robbery - the DJ-ing society, which also provides music at College bops. If you're interested in music to dance to, from cheese to happy hardcore, Daylight Robbery can cater for you. If you already have any technical DJ skills or are even just willing to learn, John's needs you!

Dave Munroe daylight-robbery@johnsjcr.org.uk (or d.j.munroe@dur.ac.uk)

Neighbours Society

Do you love Neighbours so much that it's difficult to breathe? Do you watch it twice a day and wish to name your children Karl or Harold (even if they're girls)? Wander over to the TV room in the afternoon or evening to find a whole host of like minded people.

Weekdays 1:45 pm and 5:30 pm in the TV room.

Helena Patton h.f.patton@dur.ac.uk

Orchestra

The College Orchestra is a non-auditioned group which performs to a high standard. We rehearse once a week (at the moment orchestra on Saturday mornings), and perform a very wide variety of music, from Bach to Bernstein and Vivaldi to...er...Mancini! Rehearsals are often hard work, but also a lot of fun and no matter what your ability level is you are welcome to join. We have people who have not taken graded exams to people with diplomas on their instruments.

The choir and orchestra's joint performance of Vivaldi's Gloria in the College Chapel last summer was a great success, with over 100 in the audience! We are planning to do something similar this year for the John's centenary celebrations, so if you are at all interested, please get involved!

Richard Allum r.w.allum@dur.ac.uk

Photographic Society

If you like to take pictures, then join Photosoc. With a well equipped darkroom and camera in college, workshops and opportunities to exhibit your work, it's your chance to become the next world-famous photographer.

If you're interested in learning how to use the dark room or anything else to do with photography, get in touch.

Jodie Barnes jodie-hannah.barnes@dur.ac.uk

Poker Society

The poker society consists of a group of people who play poker for fun. We meet once a week to play a casual game of poker. In the society we don't play poker for money.

We welcome people of any level. If you haven't played before, we will teach you how to play.

Weekly game at 8pm Thursdays in the Cockerton room. We normally play two games, one from 8-10pm and antoerh one from 10-11.30 pm.

If you have any questions please contact me

Gunnar Ro g.o.i.ro@dur.ac.uk

Random Events

Organises random events around college. If you're interested in coordinating the activities of this society get in touch with societies-officer@johnsjcr.org.uk

Ski Club

This year St John's Ski & Snowboard Club will be running its annual trip to the Alps. Last year's trip was described by some as '...the best holiday I've ever had..." and others said'...I just wish this trip was longer...' and it was a huge success. The trip this year will be similar and welcomes everyone from the person who has never even seen snow before let alone stepped on a pair of skis to the progressive snow-plougher to the red run maniac all the way up to the seasoned racer or powder fiend. There is something for everyone of every standard. If you haven't skied before we can organise you lessons and if you want to try Snowboarding then we can make it happen for you or if you want to be jumping off snow-covered crevasses then we can get you the insurance and set you off!

If that hasn't convinced you enough you should also know that we have some great socials and the best gilets in Durham. FACT! So while you're dreaming of what you might want to be doing during the end of the Christmas holidays then dream of the St John's College Ski & Snowboard Club trip.

Sports Supporters Society

Sport at John’s is not just about the taking part - it’s about standing on the sideline in the rain cheering on your college! John’s always has more supporters than anyone else and it’s great to share in sporting triumph or disaster without getting tired or dirty! The society basically exists to publicise forthcoming fixtures and provide the obligatory megaphones and sandwich boards. You don’t have to play any sport to join - just come along and get behind your college!

Colours Committee

Colours Committee is a newly created committee that will decide upon who shall get colours. The committee makes its' decision by looking through the nominated candidates and voting on which candidates are deserving of colours.

Colours Motion

This JJCR notes:

1)       The practice of giving colours and half colours in recognition of sporting and artistic achievement.

This JJCR believes:

1)       That colours are an incredibly important way of recognising commitment and achievement, and should be marked as such.

2)       That the current system of awarding colours and half colours places a large amount of pressure on the team captains, occasionally leading to worthy candidates not being recognised.

3)       Everyone should have the right to nominate another for colours.

This JJCR resolves:

1)       To establish a Colours Committee.

2)       To add in to the JJCR Standing Orders after current schedule 10, Schedule 11: Colours Committee, to read as follows:

1)      The role of the Colours Committee is to:

a) Consider nominations for colours and half colours

b) Judge to the best of its ability which members of the JJCR should be awarded colours and half colours, based on the nominations received.

2)      The committee shall meet annually, before the relevant awards ceremony.

3)      The committee shall consist of: the JHJCR Vice-President, JJCR Treasurer, JHJCR Communications Officer (non-voting), JJCR Chair (to chair, non-voting), Societies Officer, Sports Officer, four elected members of the JJCR (to be elected at 1st Epiphany). Of these four elected members, at least one shall be a member of a society, at least one shall be a member of a sports team, and none shall be a sports team captain or society president.

4)      The Communications Officer shall minute the meeting, anonymising contributions made.

5)       Decisions of the committee shall require a simple majority vote. In the event of a tied vote, the Sports/Societies Officer (whichever appropriate) shall have the casting vote.

6)      Should a member of the committee be under consideration for colours, they are required to recuse themselves for the duration of such discussion.

7)      Once the committee’s deliberations have begun, the meeting must proceed until all decisions have been made. The meeting may not be adjourned for any reason.

8)      The committee shall give a minimum of two weeks’ notice before they intend to meet. This notice shall be advertised both in the Junior Common Room and in Cranmer Common Room.

9)      Nominations for colours are to be made in writing at least 48 hours before the advertised start of the committee meeting. In the time between nominations being made and the committee meeting, members of the committee may gather additional information on the candidates under consideration should they deem it necessary.

10)   Nominations for colours may be made by any member of the JJCR.

11)   The criteria for the awarding of colours and half colours shall be as follows:

Full Colours should be awarded when a player has shown evidence of strong commitment AND played/performed at a good standard, for a large proportion of their time at John’s.

Half Colours should be awarded when a player has shown a reasonably high level of commitment, and displayed ability at their sport/discipline, while not quite fulfilling the requirements for Full Colours.

Though it would not be appropriate to award full colours to a player who has played/participated only in their final year, a nominee does not necessarily have to have contributed for 3 years in order to get Full Colours. They must, however, still fulfil all the requirements.
