Sport

Despite being the second smallest college, John’s competes in some of the top leagues against other colleges, which are more than double our size. Our mixed lacrosse and squash teams are the best in the uni, and many of our other teams are highly successful (with a few, errrrrrr, exceptions...but no matter).  The main appeal of collegiate sport is that anyone can join in. It doesn’t matter how good you are, there’s definitely a team for you! You can join as many teams as you like, the choice is yours. To get involved, just go along to Fresher’s Fair in Fresher’s Week, where all the sports captains will be, and sign up to anything you like.

During the year there are loads of great sport events to get involved in too. Team-John’s is the fantastically fun competitive relay race between all the different John’s sports teams. Oh yeah, and it takes place between the various college bars! John’s-Chad’s Day, or as Chad’s knows it, ‘Make John’s Feel Better About Themselves Day’, is the sports day to end all sports days with the victors winning the coveted Wilkinson-Cassidy trophy (John’s hasn’t lost it yet!)

Badminton

Hello and welcome to John's Badminton!

Despite the small size of our college, the badminton team regularly has up to 20 people playing on a Sunday afternoon at Freeman's Quay. This year, in addition to the men's team (who were oh so close to promotion) there is also going to be a female team meaning that you don't just have to play recreationally if you don't want to.

However, all is good in the John's Badminton world and if you want to play, competitively or not, just get in contact with me, Matthew Swift at m.j.swift@dur.ac.uk and I can give you the details.

Women's Football

St John’s Women’s Football is a small, friendly club – we try our best and enjoy playing competitively, especially against the much bigger colleges.  Equally, however, we like to have a laugh. Two years ago, we lifted a trophy. Last year…we didn’t…BUT all the more reason to try again this year! Most team members have never played football before uni, so don’t worry if you’ve never touched a ball, or if your football knowledge is simply David Beckham. Come and join us on a Wednesday afternoon for some healthy exercise and some fun. Whether you have played before (BRILLIANT), or whether you fancy trying something new (FANTASTIC), we will be happy to see you!

Men's Hockey

Captain of the Men ’s Hockey Club is a small but mighty contingent which competes in the Premiership of the college league, where we enjoy a fairly competitive level of hockey (though it is still largely social). There is also a knockout competition each year where we try and cause as much upset as possible by defeating one of the b igger colleges. We also form a mixed team for John’s-Chad’s day at the end of the year, and enter the college Festival of Sport. We have games once a week and train once a week. If you’ve got ANY hockey experience please consider joining the club – we are in serious need of numbers!

Lacrosse

According to Wikipedia, lacrosse is “a team sport of Native American origin played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet called a crosse or lacrosse stick”. What Wikipedia doesn’t tell you, however, is that lacrosse is one of the coolest and most exciting games that has ever been played, and that it’s kind of a big thing at John’s. We have epic socials and some of the fittest stash in the university. Sound good so far? We are also one of the college’s largest and most successful clubs (league champions for the past two years). The best part, however, is that no playing experience is needed! Get involved. You won’t regret it.

Squash

The last two years have seen John's Squash soar! We have a male team and a female team who punch miles above their weight. For one of the smallest colleges we always do incredibly well on the squash circuit. Last year paralleled the year before which saw us place 2nd in the college premiership loosing to Hatfield both years in full 5 game finals. However, we are not sulking, we are not fearful but instead are hungry for the title! We want to show the world (...of Durham at least) that we deserve the victory! But - Squash at John's is not all about the competition! We have a reputation for the team with the best moral because we hold incredible socials, never turn down the fun of college formal and douce ourselves with infamous pasta parties, drinking parties and parties we label only as "X" - you'll have to wait and see. We also hold regular training sessions and friendlies so it doesn't matter if you've played before or not, there'll be something for you. Get involved!
