Reports

Reports of Executive Officers

Josh Heald, JCR President

Hi guys. Not got much to say. Thanks you to everyone who voted in the CRC referendum; it eventually got quoracy, but hasn't been counted yet. SMG is coming up later in the meeting to elect an officer and release money to finance it. AUT has been pretty much resolved. JCR Presidents and other important people are having a big meeting later on this week to discuss issues of students so if anyone wants me to raise anything come and see me. Hope you enjoyed the walk. Does anyone have any questions? NO? Cool.

Katie Wray, VP:Estates

Hello everyone, just a quick round-up of what I've been doing., successful principal's walk renovation on Wednesday. Successful room allocation and SMG flat allocation. Went to Ikea with Alan and they forgot to charge us. Lost property is on display at the back. I'm clearing out the bike shed on Friday. don't' forget to give back your assa keys and library books.
Ed McCarter: Also the Margaret's Bike shed?
Katie Wray: No
Phil Wallbridge: Are you going to pay Ikea back?
Katie Wray: If you want us to.
Sarah Mullins: Are we allowed to use the lock-ups over summer?
Katie Wray: No

Felix Schubert, Treasurer

Hello, first of all apologies for clashing shirt and hair. Money request deadline is Wednesday. Please get a form to us. If you hand it in by then you will get money. If you owe us please pay us before Wednesday or you'll go on the debtors' list. The big bit is the budget which I've revised over the last two weeks; I've distributed copies around before. I hope you have the budget in front of you; there have been a couple of changes made. We have discovered that the allocations from the University towards the Part I budget does not actually include Cranmer so there's a lot more money available for JH and MCR. I've put up a couple of the sports teams' budgets, football and tennis particularly. Are there any questions?

Richard Kelly, Senior DSU Representative

Hello, what have I been up to? I went to the UGM on Monday. DSU disaffiliated with the Mature Students Association on the grounds that nobody knows who they are. Nightbus is now legal. DSU is looking at making a £30000 profit this year. Hopefully we'll be out of debt by 2030. There's pop on Wednesday, jazz café on Thursday, and half the money goes to an orphanage in Bolivia. There's Hound. There's DSU council with a huge number of elections which you can find on the DSU steering website
Tom Bristow: What's all this about us cutting our money to NUS?
Richard Kelly: The issue is that NUS went along with the unions rather than the students. If you feel strongly about this email me.
Josh Heald: You can't vote, but you can come and make points at a council meeting.

Martin Hodgetts, Services Manager

Erm, I've been up to various different things; pool table being broken and various shop things. Trying to sort out stash and yearbooks, which should be available Wednesday and Thursday. I've had various different meetings about SMG things which will be talked about later. I'd like to mention the buying back of gowns from leavers which will go in my TW entry. You won't get a cheque there and then but your name will be written down and you will get one soon. I still have some photographs in the flat if people haven't collected them yet.

Tim Marshall, Comms Officer

Not much to say except address list – some are incorrect, please look it over and let me know.

Alice Manuel, Social Secretary

Since the last meeting we've had the summer ball, johns day, principal's celebrations. Sorry for the Bish Bash not having coaches in advance. The Bish did seem quite happy. We went for a walk around durham and had a barbecue. The leavers dinner drinks reception starts at 6:45 and is black tie. Final numbers will be done tomorrow.
Ben Harrison: will the money released for the Principal's Celebrations be spent on something else?
AM: It goes back into Part II and stays there. Also, I have a book which will be in the JCR flat until Thursday at 5pm for those who want to write a message to the Bish. If anyone wants to write in the book it will be there.
EMC: With the SEC projects at the moment being last minute, does SEC have a problem?
AM: I'm aware the timing has been bad, and I'm sorry.
Tom Briggs: The Bish has been leaving so Alice has had a lot to do.

Daniel Baxter, Senior Bar Officer

Right I have 5 things to say. Johns Day was a great success; we made £2100. Events-wise we are doing quite well, we had the Jungle Fever event which wasn't successful which looked pretty. Acoustic Night was a massive success. Thanks to those guys who played. The final event of this term will be on the last day of this year, a cocktail soiree; black tie and cocktail dresses would be nice. The bar will be closing on Friday 30th June. The final thing, buy drinks.
Are there going to be non-alcoholic cocktails?
Yeah

Ian Kent, Cranmer President

I don't really have a lot to say. We had a Rock Eucharist, leavers meal, raft race. Cranmer term finished a week ago so I haven't been doing much.

MCR Executive

Don't have much to say. New space in margaret's. Looking forward to FW next term. That's it,
Any questions: no.

Reports of non-executive Officers

Motions

Motion for Spending: Bar Overspill Curtains

Katie Wray: I'm resubmitting the motion with one or two differences, the main one being that it's about half the money; I've mandated that I will fundraise next term. We had a problem of when to do it, as it fell through at the last minute. We will fundraise in Freshers' Week. Basically I really want to get the Bar Overspill finished as it's been 2 years; then we can move on to other things. It's £490.
£490 sounds a lot of money for curtains.
Katie Wray: Yeah originally it was £800, and these are the cheapest it's going to get. It will have blackout so no light comes in, and there will be a double curtain across the main entrance so it will keep the sound out. Curtains are very expensive but this is less than it used to be.
Ed McCarter: Can we afford NOT to do this???
Wouldn't notes 2 be better in believes?
Sophie Godfree: DO you want to amend it?
I'm suggesting it would be more in keeping with the form of the motion if this were moved.
Josh Heald: Can I suggest an amendment to move "we will fundraise" to Resolves so it mandates you to do it.
Katie Wray: I think it's been changed round since I submitted it.
Josh Heald: If Katie wants to acceptit then that's fine. My amendment is to make it say it in resolves.
Phil Wallbridge: Is there anything seriously wrong with the old curtains?
Katie Wray: They're quite outdated; they're more 70s-80s crazy patterns and we shouldn't make do with what's been there for years.
Sophie Godfree: Can we accept this on a general aye?
The motion was passed on a General Aye.

Motion for Spending: Honorary Life Membership of the JCR for the “old Execs”

Josh Heald: I think Roddy's exec, Arun's Exec, and Laura's Exec did a good job so we should give them life membership. The Presidents plus the JH Exec will get presents.
Megan Taylor: What will you spend it on?
Josh Heald: I'd like it to be a secret, but last year it was paperweights.
Katie Wray: The amendment passed at Finance Committee...
Josh Heald: Can I make an amendment to Resolves 2.
Ben Harrison: Why have you missed Dan off the List?
Josh Heald: I thought he'd like to get it when he leaves.
Ben Harrison: Can I amend the motion?
Rob Edwards: Why is Gwinnie not on the list?
Josh Heald: He was asked to resign. These aren't awards for being on Exec, they are awards for service to college. I'm not suggesting they should get the HLM for their contribution to college.
Rob Edwards: But he did his service
Josh Heald: I didn't think it was appropriate
Ed McCarter: I'm reluctant to say it, but I think Josh might be right.
Ben Harrison: I remember a year ago, Ben Heppenstall resigned, and Roddy said he wouldn't give it to him as he didn't serve the time. Why are you giving it to Tim?
Josh Heald: I thought Tim's work was outstanding
Esther James: Can't we amend it to get Gwinnie on it?
Rob Edwards: Amendment to give Gwinnie HLM:
Accepted: 17
Rejected 6
Abstentions 23
Amended Motion passed on General Aye

Motion for Spending: Furnishings for St. Margaret's Garth

Josh Heald: Before I say anything about it, I want to propose an Amendment. I want to take sofas off and add five extra armchairs which changes the total substantially. Basically this is a motion to fit out the SMG common room so it will look nice and useful stuff like that. If memory serves me correctly the total is now £1500.
Any questions?
Roddy Peters: What's the breakdown?
Josh Heald: It's what it was in TW minus the sofas plus the 5 armchairs
Josh Heald: What we now have is 10 armchairs at £35 each; £350 three bar stools at £42 each

2 round tables £60
6 chairs for tables £210
3 little tables for papers: £54 the lot
cash register £150
random stuff for shop: £70
coffee machine £250
fridges £350
Total for that is roughly £1500.

Felix Schubert [doing a calculation]: £1340
Tom Bristow: When was it proposed that the renovation would take this route?
We haven't decided whether we want all of that.
Josh Heald: It was proposed by college.
Tom Bristow: SO why are we paying?
Josh Heald: Because they're fitting it out, we're just furnishing it.
Tom Bristow: I get the sense we're being forced into something we don't want.
Josh Heald: If you said no the proposal wouldn't happen.
Tom Bristow: No, it just seems like we're bound to accept it.
Josh Heald: Well if you don't want the space...
Ed McCarter: Would I be right in thinking that college built SMG without a common room deliberately.
Josh Heald: Yes, because they didn't want a satellite community. You often have people in flats as a social area, but it's nice to have something more communal. There won't be a bar up there so it won't be too different.
Roddy Peters: Is there going to be a television in there?
Josh Heald: Not yet; I was thinking about a projector, but that's expensive. I was in any case hoping for it to be more like the Bailey Room than a TV room.
Pete Hookway: Do we get a say on what the room consists of?
Josh Heald: You can propose amendments. Pool table I'm planning on putting in anyway. Some things like that don't have to go through by motion as we don't need to pay.
Pete Hookway: SO if we didn't want a shop but we wanted vending machines could we vote on that?
Martin Hodgetts: the point of a shop would be to offer services, not just food, but to also recoup some of the money that we spend on furnishing. It would hopefully make money to reinvest back into the Part II account from which we took money to cover it.
Alison Dancer: Given that College and the JCR are proposing to spend a lot of money on it, wouldn't it be a good idea to ask the JCR whether they actually want this. I didn't have an issue. We did not feel that we needed somewhere to go. Currently in college there's a need for music practice rooms for example; I really don't think we can vote on this today. There should be a questionnaire.
Josh Heald: I don't want to imagine what a JCR meeting would have been like had we brought what I started with to a JCR meeting. To spend 3 or 4 hours to go through a load of stuff wouldn't have made a great amount of difference to the actual outcome. With regards to having a common room at all; the investment in it, given how long things last, I think it's a good investment. I put leather sofas in as I'd like to have them, but I don't have the gall to ask for £3200. At the moment there are no facilities in SMG. Generally, college is in trouble if we can't fill SMG next year; that would stop a lot of nice things that we get from happening.
Alison Dancer: If you want to attract people to SMG may be the money could go into making the flats nicer.
Josh Heald: It would go a very short distance. Probably cost about £15000 to plaster them.
Katie Wray: Point of information that there's a piano going in the studio room at the back so SMG residents have access to them.
Pete Hookway: It's a positive side if SMG can offer something difference.
Roddy Peters: What about the studio?
Josh Heald: It'll become the practice room as it's soundproofed.
Roddy Peters: How long will the chairs last
Josh Heald: they're quite sturdy
Esther James: How will people get in?
Josh Heald: Campus cards...
Donald Spencer: it's easy to reprogram them
Phil Wallbridge: Can we get Coke to pay for the fridges?
Martin Hodgetts: Perhaps. I'm trying. It depends on shop fittings. I'm going to try my hardest to get them to; they provided the one currently in the shop; I can't say for definite, but I am spending monday doing various things along these lines. We're looking at space in the shop; I'm looking into contracts for games machines and seeing what will be entailed by that.
Ed McCarter: I have to say I have to disagree with Alison when she said that SMG needs a common room; I thought it really did need a common room; if we don't fill it we are in trouble. We need to distinguish it by turning it from a block of flats into a community.
Sophie Godfree: Anyone want to oppose it?

Stuart: Last week I found out Household had taken the green boxes so we can't recycle; I got them to let me put them out again. It showed to me how much I cared; I don't have much experience in this field. The problem with the green boxes is getting them efficiently collected regularly. There are 24 boxes in college; I'd organise a rota. It'd only be a small number of boxes each. Other ideas; sorting out plans to change people's attitude around college; the problem is people leaving computers on and wasting paper. I would like to put up a board. Possibly recycling paper towels and tin cans. The main request is the green boxes, to get them working efficiently.,
Rosie: I want to be environment rep. I think it's important; Small scale; I'd like to be more involved in college. I will be living in college next year so I will be able to empty boxes. I'd carry on wit the existing recycling facilities. I always think it's strange that in the dining hall that we throw fruit away; I think we should have composting in college so we could use that. Publicising environment, such as activities that are going on, such as Environment Week. Encourage people to save electricity by things like not filling up the kettle completely. I'd consider doing a joint position.
Ben Salter: Is this only one position?
Sophie Godfree: There's an environment rep and an assistant envt rep.
Ben Salter: I'd like to elect them both as we need as many as possible. We need more people sorting out the green bins.
Stuart Morris: Maybe we don't need more reps, just more people on board. A group of maybe 5 or 10.
Katie Wray: Are you flexible enough and willing to come and do it all yourself?
Rosie Bishop: Since I'm living in college it wouldn't be much of a problem.
Stuart Morris: Well I'll be living in Viaduct but that's not far.
Megan Taylor: When does the SMG envt. Rep come up?
Ed McCarter: I think the SMG one has to live in SMG.
Sophie Godfree: Any other questions?

I want to see this project get going, and get it run to the best it can be. Vote for me as I can communicate well. I want to give something back to John's and to the JCR in the means as it's a resource for John's students in SMG and in the viaduct area. This job needs someone who can work well in a team who has drive and determination. They've got to run the shop and staff it, and maintain the relationship between John's and the other residents of the Crossgate Centre, like Yellow Wellies. I can look after this new facility so I can leave something here as a huge benefit to the college even after all of us have left.

Martin Hodgetts: You do know there's a meeting at 8:15 breakfast tomorrow?

Dave Williams: Do I get food?

Ed McCarter: I don't think Sky TV would be a good idea unless it was limited

Dave Williams: I need to talk to people to see what they think. If people wanted it...One of the things that Josh didn't want was for it to become a TV room only.

Phil Wallbridge: How do you intend to help non-Johnians enjoy the space?

Dave Williams: Well I know the Frenchies downstairs. I think talking to people's the best way.

Josh Heald: In order to staff the shop it needs to be open reliably for a number of hours; how will you force people into working it?

Dave Williams: There are lots of people up there. Use those powers of communication. Hopefully people will do it, if not Hookers will.

Hello! I think the position of LGBTA rep is critical in Johns due to the ethos. I'm really passionate about seeing someone make the most of it. I have firsthand experience being a bisexual in John's. I was a listener at school so I have skills in that area. I am hugely enthusiastic and stood for frep and female AW. I'm going to be living in SMG next year, which is highly accessible. It's only a short walk from college. I'm really excited about Q-week, and I'd like to have more events round college for it. I'd like to put on some talks to make John's an example of good practice., I'd like 2007 freps to say that we have a strong and active LGBTa officer in John's.

I have 2 positions on a youth association so I have people skills

Ed McCarter: You say you want to make John's an example of Good Practice?

Kim: I will quote the LGBTA handbook and say that John's has a bad reputation.

Josh Heald: do you have any welfare training? Do you plan to get some?

Kim: yes, I want to get training; nightline in particular.

Ed McCarter: Why haven't you done so already?

Kim: I was struggling with health issues at the time.

Pete Godden: I make a point of information; It's very hard to get a place on Nightline training but if she was LGBTA rep then Jeanna would make sure that she was given it.

The welfare system in John's is one of it's biggest strengths and I'd really like ot be a part of that system. John's is only John's because of the people and I want everyone to feel part of it. I'm a bubbly and smiley person and I'm quite well known to many first and third years. I'm genuinely excited to get to know the freshers. I'd like to be a friendly face in the first few weeks of term, I'm able to offer a sensitive non-judging ear, I'd be able offer a quiet calming environment. I'm passionate about Johns but I'm realistic and I know how hard life can be., I want to be a positive presence in John's next year whether or not I am elected. I know Jeanna already. Through getting to know Becky and Amy in the first year I know what it involves. I have the right qualities, please vote for me.

Phil Wallbridge: Do you think you're sufficiently different from Jeanna to offer a breadth of welfare

Sarah Mullins: I think we would really compliment each other.

Ed McCarter: You're well known as a member of CU; how would this fit in?

Sarah Mullins: I don't think my own opinions and beliefs would come into this. I don't think that my faith would come into this that much., A strong element of my faith is accepting everyone.

Clare Gordge: Do you think you'd be able to find the support if you needed welfare, or if something came up within your welfare that you found hard?

Sarah Mullins: I know that the uni counselling service is really great. I have loads of really amazing friends who would support me. I think my friendship with Jeanna would really support me.

Donald Spencer: I know you would be approachable. However all the welfare officers are charismatic Christians. Do you think people will find that hard?

Sarah Mullins: there are loads of other welfare options that I would direct them to.

Good evening; for those of yo who don't know me, Pete Godden. I've done AWO male for a year, I've been reasonably successful.. I've sat on university welfare committee in place of Miquela so I know how things work. For practicalities; I'll be living in SMG, they can come to me without trekking into college. Everybody knows where SMG is, I know tom asher very well so I can get advice if I need it. I will know what is expected of me. I have attended a livers-out meeting so I know what tom has to do and I'm aware of the issues surrounding getting housing; I really want to...there was very little information but a lot of worrying; if we get info out quickly then they'll chill out. I want to help college promote SMG so I'll do that. I've got ideas about LO events. I want a second parents' evening. Personality; enthusiastic; I'm well known in my year and the year above. I'm big friends with Dave Williams too.

JH: DO you have any particular strategies for negotiating the housing release date to later in epiphany term.

PG: If I put together a list of why it should be moved back i don't see why it should be such a problem to put it back one week for landlords. At least it's been put back a week from the previous year. It might be too much to expect to get it put back 2 years running, but I'll give it a go.

EMC: My landlord is trying to kick you out. What do you do?

PG: First we find out why. You come to me, I talk to them, I'll talk to Tom. I get in touch with people and then you're talking and it's all good.

KW: You're living in SMG: how will you address those who live outside SMG?

PG; it is the best location to be as it's where there are lots of john's people there.

Martin: One of the problems this year was the turnaround time for DSU with looking at contracts. How would you deal with that?

PG: DSU work very hard; they can only work so quickly'; one of the reasons was that people were very frantic about it; the landlords who hadn't got things out quickly they were worried about losing out to the competition. More healthy competition; less underhand dealing.

Rob Reeve: How do you see the LO officer working alongside the SMG officer?

PG: I can get a communion going at SMG with Livers Out. I can help Dave if he needs.

JH: First a point of information. As a livers out officer, you will get training on reading contracts. In almost every other JCR the LO officer is on Exec, so there needs to be an amount of communication. DO you have time to look at contracts and maintain that level of communication.

PG: I plan to be around college a lot so I won't be difficult to get in touch with. Also, if I know there will be two weeks where I have to put work in, I can plan around that. I know when it's coming, as long as I'm organised that shouldn't be an issue.

Cheerleading Society

SG: there's a motion to create a cheerleading society which Esther is proposing and Amy is seconding.

Esther James: Basically we wanted a cheerleading society as we think it would represent john's spirit at matches. We've sent posts round on facebook and there's a lot of people interested. The rugby boys are interested in a cheerleading society. It's not about pompoms; its about john's spirit.

Ed McCarter: How many nasty cold wet 9am events on saturday have you turned up to?

Esther James: I've supported rugby, I've been supporting a fair few hockey games.

Megan Taylor: Esther turns up to netball matches even when she's not on the team.

Dave Williams:So rugby got promoted; what about the hockey team; are you willing to put out some good face for that.

Esther James: We'll support ugly blokes as well. We're not that fickle...

Felix Schubert: How's the structure of the society organised?

Esther James: As there's about 15-16 girls we'd discuss it, but there'd be a president, a treasurer, and a social sec.

Dan Baxter: Could all those interested in joining please cheer for us...

amazing cheer including Katie Wray

Pete Hookway: I've watched films such as Bring It On. I can hardly touch my toes; would blokes be allowed to join?

Esther James: We're not sexist, but I can't see you wearing a miniskirt...

Phil Wallbridge: The sports supporters society is under sports...where will the Cheerleading Society fit in?

Esther James: It'll go under societies.

Felix Schubert: The new budget is presented for 2007; if I can find some spare money I'll see what I can do.

Formal opposition by Ed McCarter:

I think this doesn't add anything. I don't think it's going to represent John's well. I think it takes away from the Sports Supporters society.

Esther James: We don't think it takes away.

Ed McCarter: Well if you really support sports you could join that society.
