Sally: Welcome to the meeting, we have 3 a term, this is a forum between the exec. and yourselves, and allows other holders of JCR positions to present what they are getting up to. There are actually two meetings in one, the JJCR meeting and then the JHJCR meeting, which is just johns hall. If you want to speak at any point you must wear a gown, just put your hand up.
Read by Miquela Elsworth.
The minutes were approved on a general aye, there were no matters arising.
Good evening, thanks for coming. My e-mail address isn’t on the screen but please do e-mail me if you want to know anything. I want to outline to you what went over the summer. Upwards of £150000 was spent to give 6/7 south bailey, the boat house and crossgate new roofs. They have refurbished 8 margarets flats and 5 houses and worked on the electrics in the library. Schools project: This involves people going into primary schools, chatting about diet and then going and playing with them at break time; if you are interested speak to me. Trophying, another word for stealing, is great fun, but if you do trophy anything of value please bring it to me so I can take it back. Chads stole the Castle flag which was impressive. Generally feel free to get involved in the spirit of college life but don’t steal anything of value. Welcome to the JCR, hope you have enjoyed freshers’ fortnight.
Hey everyone, I have some good news and some bad news. College is a tip, freshers fortnight is over, so there is no excuse for general rubbish, college shouldn’t look like that, please tidy up. There has been a spate of vomit incidents. You can get a vom pack from Sue Hobson, if you don’t tidy up you could be fined. Next free formal hall is on Monday, I will send out an e-mail tonight with details. There is lost property in the library which will be binned tomorrow and we also have lost property from the JCR flat at the side. There are also some folders which you can help yourselves to.
Hello guys, what I would like to say first is thank you for everyone who went on the welfare awareness day. If anyone would want to get involved in another one, please let me know so I can organise it. Freshers’ ball is this Wednesday, I have a free ticket but I have to do welfare duty; do come and say hello. Nightline training is this weekend; Tuesday and Thursday are the introduction evenings. In DSU welfare exec. it was mentioned there were incidents of muggings and people being followed. Most of you had attack alarms in freshers’ packs. Be sensible.
Good evening. If you didn’t know me I’m Dan and I do everything money related regards the JCR. The uni gives us money which we spend on sports, societies etc which is part 1. Part 2 is like a business which comes from bar shop, etc, and we spend it on things you guys may want to buy. Coming up there is the election of Finance committee reps, quite important positions. There is a finance committee before every JCR meeting.
Firstly thanks everyone who came to the DSU event, check out the section in this week explaining more about DSU. If you have any issues, I can bring them up at campaigns committee. On the 20TH October there is the first UGM with motions and elections. A johns’ motion is coming up then.
Hello, I have a few things: Freshers’ matriculation photo proofs have come through, order forms will be in the Bailey Room. Stash order forms for everyone: the deadline was supposed to be today but if you couldn’t get a form, we are extending the deadline till next Monday. Laundry is a mess so if you make a mess try and clean it up yourself. I’m trying to get people to do shop shifts, thanks to everyone who has agreed to help. I will put up a blank rota on JCR shop door, please fill in your name. No one has stood for the position of Assistant Services. Basically, if anyone wants to run for it please grab me and ask me about it.
Hi everyone, thank you to everyone who came to the freshers; formal. I’ve been having lots of bailey ball meetings recently; this is our major social event. At this meeting we have 2 SEC positions up for election, decs. and secretary; you get to make everything look beautiful.
Over the past couple of weeks I have been rearranging the JCR email lists to add on our new comers and put people in the correct group, whether that is in college, st mararets etc. This should be complete now but if anyone is not receiving JCR emails – they are the ones with the JCR tag in the subject box – then please let me know. Now this brings me onto my second point, because e-mail is not our main way of communication with you guys, as we don’t want to fill up your inboxes too much. So what we tend to do is combine several e-mails in one:- so make sure you read to the bottom, or more often try and put most information in This Week, that is the wonderful publication you will have found on your dinner tables last Monday if you live in. For that reason please read it, it is packed full of useful information. Look out for the next edition tomorrow.
Yo Yo. On a wonderful note we have got rid of stella, which is rubbish and have a phallic coors tap in the bar. We also have a new T-Bar tap, that’s all nice and shiny. The beer looks and tastes good. We also have a bunch of new glasses. You are not allowed to take glasses out of the bar, if you want to take a drink out of the bar you will need a plastic. We will begin fining people who have taken them out and who have glasses in their rooms. There are also vomit rules in the bar, at LEAST £20. Please tidy it up or we will track you down. We are about to appoint a bar events committee, watch this space.
After alcohol cometh repentance, so a holy hello from Cranmer. Our intake this year is 28 anglican ordinands. These range from 20yr old James to 56yr old Sylvia, all can be seen in the bar on Tuesday nights. There are also about 20 methodists. Our contribution to college has been the 2 bugs that are going around; if you ever needed an extra disincentive not to snog someone from cranmer. We are at war with the university who 2 days before our induction week, informed us we are no longer Durham university students or NUS card holders and have library restrictions imposed upon us. We are having several meetings and will keep you informed. Laura Burden: Does that apply to students doing MA’s? Arun: MA students have been particularly hit, because the library facilities are restricted, e-journals especially. They have to pay for inter library loans and the amount of time hey can take books out for has gone from 3 months to 2 weeks, we are doing what we can. Ester James: Is there anything us freshers can do to help? Arun: We are trying to get people together to lobby the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor etc. Details will be in This Week.
The MCR is the postgraduate body, Middle Common Room. We have just elected out new exec. Lisa Mol, the president and Katie and Luxmy our new treasurers. There are 75 postgrads in Johns, several were undergrads here before. Please make them welcome. Roddy:Congratulations to new exec. APPLAUSE
Thank you to all freshers who came to freshers duck event. We raised £75 which is really good for something without an entrance fee. On wednesday is the application deadline for the Sri Lanka project, a3 month project over summer. Durham is running it, it is not open to freshers. Back to school is a week on Wednesday and the Dublin hitch hike is the following weekend, then on 6th Nov we have Durham duck race.
Hi, I’m Josh and I spend may too much time doing computery things. I have some info. about the website: sorry you don’t have a nice new website yet, all I can do is point my finger at ITS. They have problems with how they set things up, they want to get JCRs off university webspace as it doesn’t fit with their new rebranding. I’ve talked to Roddy and we are considering moving off uni webspace. To get a commercial company to host us would probably cost about £100 a year. RP: The upshot would be we would be www.stjohnsjcr.com or something. Sebastian de Lemos: I can probably host you for about £20 JH: This would be one with a decent bandwidth and e-commerce so we could sell bailey ball tickets etc. Luke McDermott: Would there be the possibility to get sponsorship? JH: Possibly
Motion text
Sally: We have our first motion ALARM BELL (a saucepan being struck!) Sally: explains what motion is, that a proposer and seconder are needed and how notes, believes and resolves work. Roddy reads the motion Anna McMullen: What do we do with all the clothes people have taken off? Roddy: I don’t know, I suppose we could burn them. Anna: In which case, should we not release some money to have that done professionally? Roddy: A good idea, are you suggesting an amendment? ALARM BELL Sally: The term amendment was explained. What amendment are you suggesting? Anna: Well I had some clothes burnt last holiday, for everyone it will cost us roughly £150. I’m not sure exactly. So I thnk it should say resolves 4: To release up to £150 from the Part II budget to incinerate the clothes people would otherwise have worn. ALARM BELL Sally: Dan, would you explain what approximately means. Dan Baxter: The financial terms approximately, up to and exactly were explained Sally: Do you accept the amendment Roddy? Roddy: Yes Sally: Any other questions? Tom Bristow: I understand we have a policy which bans Nestle and its subsidiaries from being sold in College. Perrier is a subsidiary of Nestle and I therefore think we shouldn’t buy any water from them. Sally:The JCR policies are explained. Will you remove that part Roddy? Roddy: Ok then. Sally: So now this motion is all pretty and complete as Roddy would like it to be, can we take this on a general aye? Ben Harrison: I’m not happy with this motion and would like to oppose it on the grounds that there are some people I would rather not see with just a gown on. ALARM BELLS Sally: Formal opposition is explained James Hunt: I would like to propose a procedural motion that this house move at once to summations and then to the vote. ALARM BELL Sally: Procedural motions explained. In favour: 16 Against: 39 Abstentions: 10 Thus the motion fell Helen Smith: If a motion has failed, can’t it not be brought back? Sally: It would need to be amended. All this procedure is in the online constitution.

Anna:We will hopefully have a fireworks display to try and involve members of Margarets in college. It will cost approximately £300. RP: We may come up against stumbling blocks from the council etc, but the next meeting is after the event. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.
Motion text
Anna: This is on the 11th November, its a big thing, we spend a lot of money on it. This motion goes through every year. It subsidises the ticket costs, tickets will cost £50, not £55. EdMcCarter: When sports costs have been rising, can we justify this expenditure DanB:Sports is part 1 and part 2 is loaded Lisa Mol: You said part 2 is loaded, can you afford to put more money so the ticket costs goes down more? Anna: This is the cheapest cost in the university, it involves a meal and wine. We are looking into sponsorship. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.
Motion text
Dan Christian: This is a motion to note that all the exec and sec work really hard so we give them a free bailey ball ticket. It is basically a reward for all the work they do, they don’t get paid at all. If a member of exec. was also on SEC last year they get 2 tickets, as they do the same amount of work as 2 positions. RP: We abstained in FC on Friday, as there are a lot of people on exec. on fc. DC: This has happened in previous years. There being no formal opposition the motion was passed on a general aye.
Motion text
Rob Reeve: This Motion is basically releasing money to fund the production of This Week. As I said before this is the main method of communication in college, especially to livers out and so we tend to send it first class to those livers out not living in Margarets and hand deliver it to Margarets. Approximately £670 is being released. Katie Carter: Is This Week sent to postgrads? Rob: No Katie: Could it be? Rob: I could get together with the MCR exec to discuss that possibility. Arun Arora: As a point of information, a copy for cranmer is placed in our common room. People know it is there and that is sufficient. Rob: It is also posted online. Lisa Mol: With a lot of Postgrads living out of college, it really needs to be posted to them. Roddy: The MCR is not completely part of the JJCR as it is a Middle common room and not Junior common room. Sally: A motion could be put through at a later date if funding was wanted for sending This Week to postgrads, at the moment we are discussing sending it to John’s hall. Martin Hodgetts: Is this for a term or for the year? Rob: The year. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.
Motion text
This motion was passed by finance committee. RP: If you ever do have a problem with such a motion, then do say as a JCR meeting can overturn finance committee.
Motion text
Dan Baxter: 7 of us live in, 2 live out. When they come into college it is nice if they can eat whilst they are here. It releases enough so they have sufficient meals a week to do their job. Sarah Gadsen: Does that cover members of SEC on the run up to the bailey ball? DB: The bailey ball budget has some money for food which can be spent as such. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.

Presented by James Hunt and Luke McDermott: James: For this term, after refs fees, we only have £15 to buy sports equipment which we need now. We want to buy a kit bag and put it in the sports locker, in the past a lot of kit has been lost, if we can buy our kit and keep it in the lockup it should be a good investment. We think it will benefit a lot of people. Tom Bristow: Could you comment on the fact that football gets £600 a year, and basketball/badminton gets £15/£10? James: The budgets are part 1 budgets, They get set on calendar years, I’m working on the remainder of the last captain’s budget. I’ve spent £15 of my own money to just get some footballs to train with. Mens Bs and Womens football tend to train at the same time, can you assure us that the women would have access? James: The women usually train about 30mins before. To avoid this problem in the future, is it possible to start the budget September to august? DB: I face a complicated role, as I am forced to run the budget on a calendar year basis, I am elected march to march and the academic year is September. This is the simplest solution. Byron: Everyone is spending a lot of money? But how much money do we have? DB: This will be the most we spend in any one meeting, we currently have about £14000. We have a constant turnover, all our profit is reinvested again. We are not overspending. Byron Romain: Is there enough? DB: Yes Luxmy: What happened to the kit from last year? James Hunt: Equipment was mysteriously lost. People tend to buy their own kits. Megan: Why are the goals needed? Aren’t there goals at Maiden Castle? James: The goals at Maiden castle are very heavy. James: The 5aside goals can be adjusted to a range of sizes and fold up to fit in the lockups. EdMcCarter: It sounds as if there has been mismanagement of spending money and lost kit. (The football club as a cohesive unit) James Hunt: Over the past 3 years, kit has been bought. But it hasn’t been kept in one place and so has been lost. Luke: We have found the cheapest things. Helen Smith: As captains, will you have full responsibility for the kit? James: I would like to have a sign in sheet, and I will take responsibility if I do it etc. Megan: Is there any way of some of the money coming out of next year’s budget, so you are getting a loan? I brought this up in finance committee. We won’t need much more so we probably won’t spend all our budget next year. Megan: Is there any way in changing next year’s budget? Dan: Yes RP: Even if we did do a loan, this is above their expenditure anyway. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye

Roddy:I think we need an alumni rep. in 3 years time we have our centenary. I think we can do a better job to keep in contact with Alumni. Ben Harrison: Is there still a St. John’s Society rep in the constitution? Roddy: The position exists, I’m not sure If we elect it. No, scrap that, I am the society rep, it was changed by college. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.

Hannah: Basically, I don’t think I need a shop manager, but someone later on may. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.

Helen: Me and Rachel (senior duck reps) believe the liason officer is basically dormant, so we want to replace that with a sponsorship secretary whose job it would be to get either free prizes or buy them, taking pressure off me and Rachel. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.
Jess Caddy: POI: It’s a honorarium position, so college give them £100. There being no call to hust, the candidate was elected on a general aye.
Paul: Im a fresher, keen and enthusiastic, last year I spent doing a similar job in my church, overseeing maintenance and use of the drum kit. I would like to introduce a system of signing in and out of the kit so damage can be attributed. James: I am a third year, have been playing drums for 15 years, I would like to think I know a bit about keeping them in good order. Also a member of a lucrative band which uses it a fair bit so would like to know when I can use it. Roddy: Do either of you think it would be advisable to have a deposit, and if so how much? James: Yes, it would be good, expensive equipment, the kit john’s have is a decent kit about £1000. Instead of a deposit, I would prefer to know a bit about people’s experience when people sign it out. Paul:I wouldn’t impose a deposit when they take the kit out but if it was damaged the damage could be attributed to a certain person. Ed: Would the candidate think a visual inspection of the kit could be done every time? James: Certainly it would be possible Paul: I would advise that if the kit was damaged, they didn’t use it, so when people come to use it they look at it.
Paul: 17 votes James: 17 votes
RON: 0 votes Abstained: 26 Thus James was duly elected.
There being no call to hust, the candidate was elected on a general aye.
Helen: Vice Chair will take on duck-sec liason role and they will help me and rachel organise the events. Felix: The first position I had was duck treasurer, so please get involved. Not much work
Megan Is there a bailey room tidier? Jess: It is appointed, hopefully early this week. Ed: Do we still have a tostie bar? Alice Manuel: It will start on Wednesday
End of JJCR Meeting
JESS: The house reps, basically there is one for each house you live in, they meet at house committee, just once a term, they represent your house, so anyone can come to you with ideas, we have informal meetings. If you have any really good ideas for college you can have an effect.
There being no call to hust, the candidate was elected on a general aye.

Ed: I lived in cranmer in my first year and I was the rep then, it is a great, spiritual rep, I enjoyed being the rep before and would quite like to do it. Chris: I am a fresher and I think why I would like to be cranmer rep is because I feel I know all the freshers in cranmer and am working my way around the third years. I think the people at the lower end are sometimes less represented, so it would be good to have a first year as the rep. Roddy: Do you already have any ideas about what you want cranmer to do? Ed: I think the main work is the Vac Kitchen, but it can get skanky so in my first year I tried to organise a way of cleaning it up. It might be worth getting a team of people with a sponge. I think the kitchen may need improvements. Chris: Everyone seems to get lost in Cranmer, could have some signs, and some shaver points.
Chris: 44 votes Ed: 7 votes

JC: Only once a term, you have to live in, you get to have a say about what you eat, you can make quite good changes. It is what brunch came from. There were no other candidates.
I’ve done this for a year, basically fixing computers and filling the printer.
Anna: How long will the printer be? Josh: ITS said they don’t know. There being no formal opposition, the candidate was elected on a general aye.

Byron: As some of you may or may not know, I’ve had some welfare issues since I’ve arrived, Miquela has been great at sorting them out for me, I thus want to get involved and know what can come up. At my old school I was involved in welfare for my house, lots of chaps asking me about various things. Trained in first aid, I also want to do the nightline training and there’s no-one else with such colourful waistcoats to put a smile on anyone’s face. Particularly dealing with male problems. Peter: Hi, I’m pete, I do like looking after people, done it a lot in my life, got 4 siubling, head boy at my school involved in initiating a lot of the new students, I really enjoyed going to the welfare training day and was able to put a condom on a fake willy without using my fingers and Miquela was very impressed. I like to think I’m a pretty good guy, not intimidating, so people are happy to come to me, a couple of people have come to me when they are feeling down. I have lots of chocolate hopbnobs. I am happy talking to guys/ girls, or whatever. Ben: Do the candidates share a room? Peter: Yes, I do but james has a girlfriend who he is with most of the time. Bryon: No, I’m in Haughton. Miquela: How would you deal with your personal boundaries and how you would see people outside situations? Bryon: I think it is important to speak to them as to how they want to deal with things. Everything would be confidential, I am a very liberal person. I’nm more than happy to speak to anyone about anything. Peter: At the welfare day we were told there is a difference between giving advice to a friend and an official welfare position where you aren’t supposed to lecture someone. I would make sure I would go by the welfare guidelines, I would make sure I knew if people were coming to me as a friend or in the position. Dan Christian: How would you deal with older students? Byron: I don’t find older students intimidating at all, if they were happy enough to seek me out I would be more than happy to give that. You treat people as individuals. Pete: I have 4 older bros. and sisters, I have given my 31yr old brother advidce before, that would be fine. Jeanna: If someone came to you with an issue that was sensitive to you, how would you deal with that? Bryon: I think if you have relevant experience, I think it is good for people to know that you understand and that you have been through the same sort of things. I think the experience I have been through means I can help better. Pete: I would agree it is useful to be able to draw on a certain level of advice, if you have been in a similar situation, I think the worst thing is to make things about you and not about them, I would be more inclined not to give away that sort of thing. I don’t think you want to make things too personal. I would try to steer away from anything to do with me. Bryon: To clarify, I wouldn’t jump in and talk about myself for ¾ of an hour, I would draw on personal experience. Pete: I would never accuse byron of that. What would you do if a fresher told you they were so unhappy they wanted to leave johns? Pete: You can do an number of things, I could refer them to their tutor, I could ask them their positive things, and try and work through their negative things and talk through things. If after that it still wasn’t working, I would get their tutor involved as in the end of the day they would be more involved. Bryon: I have personal experience, as I was considering leaving johns, I went to welfare first and then to my tutor. I think it is important to make sure you don’t feel alone. I think it is really important to know it is natural to feel homesick. And then go through pros and cons, can generally find a balance. Dan Christian: Can I call for a secret ballot? Seconded by Matt Giles Anna McMullen: I oppose that. Seconded by Rachel Anna:I just think it is better to get things over and done with, if it was a secret ballot. I don’t think cliques or whatever have been formed Matt: I think it is a very important position in college, I think there should be some form of secrecy. Felix: It would also give the whole JCR to vote on this. In favour of secret ballot: 22 Against:31 Thus the motion to have a secret ballot fell.
