The minutes were approved on a general aye, there were no matters arising.
Sorry for the delay in getting started. The computer and projector will only work one way round to do the video later. Thank you for coming! We have quite a lot coming up today so I'll make this brief. At PresComm we have had some issues relating to housing dates and we are opposing differential rent charges. I also went to Resources Committee this week, a sub-committee of College Council, where we looked at College finances with a fine toothcomb. Arun went to prison instead. Any questions? Ed: What is a differential rate? RP: If your room has a sink you pay more.
If anyone is not going to the bailey ball you have to have a packed tea between 4 and 6 and need to sign up before noon Thursday from the SEC notice board. I have 2 positions I need to appoint, library rep who liases with the librarian and has a say in the development of the library. If anyone is interested come and talk to me. The other position is office manager, they get £50 a term, snoop around the flat. That is everything.
Hi guys. There’s blood donation sessions this week, do something amazing. You get free Ben and Jerries Ice Cream! Details will be in This Week. Travel bursaries: there is a lot of support available if you are travelling in the holidays. Just send me an e-mail detailing how much you need. Don’t be afraid of applying. You may have heard about the intruder. Please be safe and lock your doors. It is so easy to break in, be aware and politely question strangers.
Hello, since last meeting I have activated the debtors list, got some money and stopped it. Finance Committee: The choir motion was amended to resolve the release of less money. I still have photos to give out from last year’s bailey ball and some pictures to sell from my room.
Hey everyone, first there will be a student forum taking place in DSU at 4:30 to ask qns of Bill Bryson 14th Nov – Next council at Stockton. ROAD TRIP! Check it out, as DSU may change the idea of councils. The referendum to change this would occur before end of term. NUS delegations, chance to represent Durham. People got elected to DSU positions at council, if you want to get involved speak to me.
I don’t have anything to report.
Thanks to everyone who came to the fireworks, especially to those who set it off. Bit scary. Bailey Ball, if you haven’t got a ticket WHY NOT? Ball starts from Haughton entrance at 6:30. Black Tie dress code.
Just one thing today. Ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors at our weekly exec meetings, chairs committee meetings or finance committee meetings? Well now you can find out! Summary minutes are going to appear on the website as of this week. So if you are of a nosey disposition check it out
I’ve been sorting out bailey ball bar things. BB Warmup on Tuesday night, come dressed up. Desert Night. Games from 8:30. On the bailey ball bar is open at 7pm till 1am. Bar will be in CCR, decked out with decs by the BEC. The bar quiz on Tuesday raised £30, thank you for coming to that. Lastly, I’m currently in the process of creating a photo collage in the back corner of the bar. If you want your photo on that collage please put them in an envelope in the G pigeon hole in the bailey room and I will snip it up and put it on. Any leg hair related qns?
Just to clear up Roddy’s comment, I’m spending 2 days a week in prison, wed and Sunday. Not for any naughtiness. NUS Card update: We now have cards (almost), thank you everyone for supporting that. The university still doesn’t want us as students. Apologies for those of you who have been woken by Cranmer students, we are sorry, it won’t happen again. Instead you get bells! There is a loud clanging noise at 7:50. We don’t like them either, the principal loves them. Today is the start of Cranmer reading week, so most of us won’t be here. Please don’t destroy the CCR on the bailey ball.
Basically the MCR has been trying to trace its members, we don’t know who they are! I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to get to know people. We are getting the hang of finances. We had a social with joint Cranmer and 4th years, thank you to the 4th years who came. Good luck to those having their legs waxed.
I’ve been looking for getting wireless internet in the library. How many people would be interested. Its not cheap, but it might be useful. Show of hands. (substantial number)
Firstly, thank you for everyone who came to Narnia night, raised 34/35 pounds. The duck race was held today, if you won you will find out this next week. The charity challenge: Durham rugby match, tickets are £1. Waxing tonight, you know you want to come, it will be fantastic. At the moment it is quite close. It will be painful. Duck positions, there are four coming up, have a laugh with us. I need to go count money!

The motion was read by Sarah Dewhurst This motion is so that college choir don’t have to do the boring anthem suggested. There is a good new anthem which college don’t want to pay for. The motion is to get £120 to pay for this. Robert Seddon: Is it more prudent to put in the believes section that we will perform something? Sarah Dewhurst: If we get the money we will perform it. Robert Seddon: I think it should be made clear it is a probable event. Arun: To clear that up you could add at the end of 3 “if this motion is passed” This was accepted by Sarah Anna McMullen: Normally do the choir hire music? Sarah: Usually we scrounge from other colleges. Ed McCarter: It seems like a lot of money for 1 song. Is it really that good? Sarah: Yes Why don’t you just bring in a choir membership fee? Sarah: It is because we are singing this in a college service for a college event. There being no formal opposition the motion was passed on a general aye.

The motion was explained by Matt Giles Matt: Having won Cross Country again, we are keeping the trophy, so there isn’t one for us to win next year. The motion was passed by finance committee
Motion text
Tom Bristow: Daylight Robbery is a society and owns a lot of equipment that is used for events like Johnstock, like the bops, etc. The current equipment is either illegal or not working, tonight’s shenanigans show that! We often use people’s personal equipment. There being no formal opposition the motion was passed on a general aye.
Motion text
Felix Schubert: This goes along similar lines. BTC only did one play last year, we have a lot this year, already 3 plays in next 3 months. Theatre without lights is rubbish. We could hire this but it is very expensive compared to the amount it costs to buy it. We are asking for £468 to buy a set of 8 lights plus dimming equipment. Anna: Can they be used for bops? Felix: Yes Tom: Daylight robbery had some which were illegal. Lisa: How long would they last? Felix: They would need to be looked after to last long. We are looking into finding a better place to store equipment so it can be looked after possibly. Up to 10 years. A reasonable investment. Arun: I don’t know much about staging plays, but don’t you usually do it in a theatre. Felix: We are doing it here. Arun: Should not the management of the lights be sorted out first? Felix: There are other places in college which we could use. Ed McCarter: Is there a reason you didn’t go for permanent rigs, which would halve the cost? Tom: I’m not sure they would half the cost. There being no formal opposition, the motion was passed on a general aye.

Felix: Basically, the essence is that a largish group of us has been thinking about the fact that if people who are on 4 year degree courses, live out for three of those, it puts a lot of financial and social pressure on them. We are proposing guaranteeing fourth years a place in if they haven’t lived in in their 3rd year. It would put people even with language students. Ben Harrison: Can I propose an amendment. The linguist policy is up for review every year. Can this be also? Felix: People would plan further years ahead of time, so it wouldn’t be fair if things were changed. Ben Harrison: I think the 2 should be consistent. Sophie Godfree: That works, but it needs to apply for the current second years, Jess: POI the only problem logistically, is if you are doing the ballot, people won’t know if they have a room because it is not calculated until the end, but it is the same as the year abroad people. Lee Lavery: Where would we stand with regards the year abroad, above or below? Felix: It is the dependant on the order you are drawn. Ed McCarter: In my view this whole motion is flawed, unfair and unnecessary. You seem to say the people who integrate least with college should be given priority and that Margarets isn’t good enough. Felix: We are saying it is harder to find house mates. People who are applying for Masters aren’t undergrads. Jess: Can I say, it is not possible to include masters students with this. Roddy: The social point of this is that their peer group has left. Dan: As a POI I had a quick count as to how many people it would involve. Roughly 27 fourth years , about 15 will be guaranteed a motion in college from this motion. Jess: There are about 65 rooms in college but some are taken out for guaranteed exec rooms. Adam Mather: I understand college is looking into buying more property, would it stifle college growth. Roddy: It doesn’t affect freshers. College can’t afford more property Is is not worth pointing out a lot of people would get onto ballot anyway. Felix: In my year 31 people on 4th year courses. 8 of which are currently living in. 6 are year abroad students which get a room. 2 have own property. That leaves 15 ppl. A lot of them would get in anyway. Formal opposition by Ed McCarter A procedural motion to extend the time on this item. Proposed: Josh Heald Seconded: Ben Harrison Ed McCarter: I think this is simply unfair, it distortion of the balance of third years in college. Jess: This year the room ballot will be an opt in system. This motion doesn’t mean you have to live in. Anna: The only reason I would see is if the welfare of 4th year students would be a problem. Felix: It not just that, its that you are a finalist, you get meals cooked. We can’t guarantee everyone a room, but it would be an extra burden if you have already had 2 years living out. Ed: I would make the point that Margarets seems to exist to sweep people up who don’t have a place to live. Roddy: POI The year abroad students are guaranteed a place because they aren’t here to find a house. In Favour: 85 Against: 9 Abstention: 9

Sarah Dewhurst: The machine is a new machine which has come in since the 3 of us became managers. We have to come in in 2s to fill it up, it takes forever, we already have to come in often for shop stock. The motion is to have people in college to check levels and stock it up Hannah: The JWS is based on a volunteer system. Could you just make it that the last person in the shift fills it, considering that there are a lot of positions not filled. Sarah: There is a lot of money in the machine, it would be better for the position to be official. Roddy: If someone wants to do it anyway, couldn’t they just do it? Hannah: People deal with the till money anyway. Ben Harrison: In the future it may be that someone doesn’t want to do it. Sarah: If there is no position there, future JWS managers would still have the same responsibility and problems. Ben: In johns I think there are a lot of people who want to be involved, I think you could find enough people who want to do it. Sarah: I just think it would be better to have one person responsible. If you were to make it the person who had the last shift, wouldn’t that allow just as much Sarah: There would be 5/6 people, we wouldn’t know which person to go to with any problems. Arun: Procedural motion to move to a vote. Seconded: Justin Price Ben Harrison: Formal opposition: I think the JWS plays an important role, and vending machine is important part. I just don’t think we need a specific position for this. If it is stocked regularly it isn’t a big event. For: 53 Against: 17 Abst:16

The motion was read by Sally as the proposer and seconder were working the bar door. Jess: Is anyone here who is a member who can say what they do? Pete Timms: Basically it’s the idea to have random events, random poems, events like random excursions, meals out, musical events. It could be anything. Luxmy: When they talk about a treasurer, I take it they have a budget then? Dan: No There being no formal opposition the motion was passed on a general aye.
discussion
Can john’s JJCR actually help? Sally: I think it is to do with DSU, we mandate the dsu reps to vote accordingly. DAN: As a POI it is more to do with protests not money. Ed McCarter: I would question us giving any help William Holloway: Isn’t this open to abuse? Sally: I wouldn’t let anything come to this meeting that abused it. Sarah: Shouldn’t it be any motion supporting cancellation of 3rd world debt. Sally: Good Point! There being no formal opposition the policy was renewed on a general aye.
Sally: As top up fees have now been introduced, we propose to amend the policy to oppose any increase in top up fees. Lee Lavery: Surely they are allowed to increase with inflation. The motion was altered to allow above inflation increases Would it also be possible to support anything that abolishes top up fees? this was accepted There being no formal opposition the amended policy was renewed on a general aye.
Tom Bristow: How can you oppose “hidden costs” Sally: Hidden costs are costs that are hidden from us, but may be known to people higher up. Roddy: They do it all over the place Can you exemplify them? Arun: They are currently considering charging cranmer students an extra £20 for library usage. There being no formal opposition the policy was accepted on a general aye.

Hi I’m Rebecca, this is Martin, as freshers we want to be as involves as possible. We will be part of community for 3 years. Both had experience of similar roles, Rebecca as senior prefect. Similarly Martin was deputy head boy. We want to put something positive back into johns. We think as a joint candidates we can increase the rate at which problems are dealt with. If elected we want to serve you as best as possible. Steve Henry: What sort of services would you be willing to offer and why? Candidate: We will keep it purely laundry and JCR shop. We will be assisting Hannah. Dan Baxter: Do you feel 2 people are necessary? Rebecca: Yes Dan: Why Martin: We believe it is the best way to ensure everything is done as quickly as possible. We compliment each other. We think this would be the best way. Ben Harrison: How will you cheer up the services manager when she gets in a bad mood? Rebecca: Chocolate Hannah: POI I don’t ever get in a bad mood.

Chris says he thinks he is a happy person, comfortable meeting new people, embodies johns spirit by supporting sport. I do a range of activities, would like to get a variety of people to Johns college. Helen Smith: I thought that if people had given their name in, other people can’t put their name in as a candidate. Roddy Peters: I don't think there is anything to say that in the constitution. Martin: Who had an interview among you? Henry and Clare Tom Bristow: How would you deal with less social people, what advice would you give them? Reverse order: I quite like having a night in too, would see if they want having company, suggest about societies but reassure them that lots of people at johns. Reassure them that they don’t have to go out. Make sure there is a range of activities I know Ester’s sister is at johns and know a lot and so can suggest activities Best thing about johns is everyone welcome Make sure choice of activities and make sure happy I’ve found it is easy to find people up for same as you Admittedly only occasional clubber but others like that Best to cater for people’s needs and see from then.
