    Reports

    Reports of Executive Officers

    Josh Heald, President

Just for the record Roddy's going to pay We've been to Edinburgh which has been fun. I've been on various training days. I've been to a meeting about a new website called Hero for everything that's not on UCAS. Went quite well. Made some finishing touches to the new website which is going live on Wednesday. Please everybody fill in the questionnaire as it's your chance to make a difference. The Bish announced at formal night that there will be a free trip to Lindisfarne, that'd be good fun. Gwinnie asked me to mention the Hill vs. Bailey rugby match in aid of a guy who was paralysed. Lister and Gwinnie and Paddy are playing, so good luck to them. Any questions? OK

    Katie Wray, VP:Estates

Right. Er, Just from the last week I talked to the environment reps and we're getting new boxes. We had a meeting about working for fund-raising about the bar overspill. Hope you enjoyed formal. Got another one this Friday; the St.. Alan's going to come and talk to you briefly in a minute about the gardens. People don't know what to do when they break glass; you have to talk to the staff and they will clear it up. Security; don't leave windows and doors open unattended. If people are interested in the buffet when the archbishop comes it's at 6:30. If you've got any keys that open doors other than your own. If people know where the parsonage key is let us know; it's got a wooden spoon on it. Also about standing orders; some banks have been taking them out early. Ed McCarter. The St. John Ante Portam Latinam formal; there used to be an order of priority for the formal; why isn't that so this time? Why is there a waiting list of Johnians when there are a few guests? K: I think it's important that we open it up to all years. Ed McCarter. It would also have been much more suitable to put only one email address out. Katie: I'm having problems accessing it; it's on someone else's computer and they're forwarding the emails from there. We're trying to get the problem sorted out with email addresses. Guests: we talked about it today, and i think it is important to allow guests as other colleges do. We don't want completely closed events. Josh: We've got a guest limit of 5. Ed McCarter: So a decision was taken that there should no longer be third year priority Josh: Well I don't know that there was one last year. There's no record of it. Katie: Alison wanted the numbers early. It's important that people tell me if they're dropping out.

    Jeanna Shalkowski, VP:Welfare

This past week I've updated the welfare boards. There is a new Nightbus timetable and route. If you're living out, check the website. We're going to be getting some more cards as well. There's a 50p charge which is compulsory. I had DSU welfare exec meetings and training for college welfare officers. There's a talk at Trevs on self harm. Go if you're interested and want a professional viewpoint and if you are interested in getting involved in college welfare. There's been drink spiking in Newcastle so beware. Changes have been made to DSU to make it more accessible to disabled students including a new toilet. Wed 3rd May is Chlamydia screening day. In the toilets in Linton B and Cruddas A. They need to go to DSU between 3 and 4 on the 3rd. Stress Less; the DSU campaign is running a Ben and Jerry's ice cream cafe which is on Thursday with free samples; I think that's from 8 o clock. In the next meeting there are elections for Livers-Out officer and LGBTa officer. Exam quiet begins 8th May. If you are offended by our costumes please come and see me afterwards. Josh: the LGBTa officer is dependent on the CRC changes being implemented by the referendum Exam quiet : no games on library lawn. No noise after 11pm. It's available on the website, but there are rules for play of ball games within college., Anna McMullen: Has Tesco been taken off the Nightbus Route. Josh: It is there, but you don't have a 15min gap. Thank you

    Felix Schubert, Treasurer

I hate these things. Alright. We had a fun weekend away This week Katie and I met with the sponsorship chair to discuss how we're going to get curtains for Linton. Had my first finance comm. I will be reviewing the budget for societies and Part I after the exams. That's pretty much everything. Good luck to those standing for positions.

    Richard Kelly, Senior DSU Representative

Last week I had my first DSU exec committee. We talked about adding non-sabbatical officers to DSU on the EWO's team. We talked about a diversity campaign on the 5th which will involve Anglo-Japanese society, Teikyo, etc. There'll be food. Feel free to come along, hopefully it will become an annual event. The president said that the Nightbus route business cards are coming soon and I'll get them to Jeanna, J: Alternatively nightbus.dsu.org.uk Also some people are worried about the lecturers. Lecturers should be giving feedback; if they're not. Talk to the lecturer; if not, complain about them to DSU. I've been updating the DSU boards. Now there ar emotions up there that you might find interesting. Next time is Starbucks and EWO. There are a lot of positions up for election. Come and see me. At 5pm in Hatfield next week there's an open meeting about the environment.

    Martin Hodgetts, Services Manager

Hi This week I had a meeting with the JWS managers. There will be JWS products in the shop. I did an order which has come; Ginsters are in. If anyone wants a shift in the shop see me., went to finance committee. Met with Armstrong's and Donald to do with stash. Major thing to say; photographs are happening on Wednesday; timetable in the email and in This Week. If anyone could possibly help on weds with benches moving to library lawn see me after the meeting. The photos are going to be on sale from about Friday teatime. I'll let you know when that'll finish. They'll be on sale at all mealtimes. Ta

    Alice Manuel, Social Secretary

This week has mainly been lots of planning as the social events are to be post exams. I've met with Alan usher about various things. Bish celebration on the 3rd June. Service in Oswald's. We're going to organise something in the evening. 9th June Johns Day, 13th June Summer Ball. Had my first SEC meeting minus treasurer and technician. Any questions?

    Tim Marshall, Comms Officer

Right... Not much to say really. The biggest thing this week is...erm...This Week. It's changed format slightly, but the content's the same. A new addition is Chaplain's Chat. That's about it really. Thanks

    Dan Baxter, Senior Bar Officer

Good evening. We've scrubbed the main floor. It's no longer black. Touched up the mural.. sanded and varnished tables., added a new light in the passage. Added the Bishop Stephen to our selection of ales which is nice, new flavour of J20. Looking to put up more photos in the bar. If you have them, get them to me and I'll put them up., the bar will be open in exams., don't expect it to be very busy. We have a quiz on Tuesday from 9 at £1 per person. Wine for formal at £6 per person. Any questions? Nope?

    Ian Kent, President, Cranmer Exec

Hello. My name's Ian Kent. I'm the new CCR president. I live in Gateshead but you might have seen me about. The new Cranmer exec is now in place. I introduce my VP Catherine green. In terms of what's going on at Cranmer. One thing is block teaching, which makes it a strange term for us so we're not around as much. The only other thing to tell you about is that we have two new staff appointments which we're going to sort out this term. One is Biblical Studies. The other is the Chaplain's post. The interviews will be on the 18th of may and this person will be chaplain to the whole of college.

    Lisa Mol, MCR PResident

Right, MCR May Ball. Really good, might be doing that again. Not much happens otherwise: any questions?

    Reports of non-executive Officers

    Alan Usher: Maintenance Report

I drew the short straw. I'm here. What this college doesn't have is a big problem with vandalism and misuse in college. What we do have is a small problem that's getting bigger. This is your home., this is not my home. I was going to say treat it like your home but... It gets me upset when I see things deliberately broken. Accidents happen. But I do get slightly miffed when people deliberately break things. One it takes time., two it costs money to fix it. Then I can't spend money on making things better. The nicest thing in college is the grounds. I've managed to employ a gardener. Have barbecues, get drunk, but when you're finished CLEAN UP. People walk around in bare feet. If someone misbehaves, shop them to [the exec]. I've been here 7 years and I love it. It's a great place,.keep it this way.

    Motions

    MFS: Exec Meal Cards

    Motion text
Approved by finance committee. Passed on a General Aye

    MFS: John's Day

    Motion text
Alice: John's day is the biggest event of the college. It's all day from about 7 until 3 in the morning. We run events all day and for it to be free and all of the undergrads and postgrads to go, the JCR releases money and then college matches it. Sophie: we need to accept this because it's our money. College are pledged to give us as much any questions? Matt Giles: how much was spent on it last year F: £2600. Passed on a General Aye

    MFS: Principal's Celebration

    Motion text
This is a motion to put on a day to say thanks to the Bish because he's such a legend The vague plan is to walk to the beach and to have a BBQ and various things on the beach. College is having a celebration on the 3rd. This will be on the 17th. The college thing will be much more formal, with the bishop's invited guests. This is something for us to really enjoy. AMCM: what's this £500 paying for? J: food and buses F: it's providing food and subsidising travel. A: is it going to be a surprise? J: no, because we need to book the Bish Passed on a General Aye.

    Presentation of CRC's findings.

What we have proposed in brief is to add a complaints procedure which we should have had for years (1994 education act) we've removed a few unnecessary positions and created another finance committee rep. we've added the LGBTa rep and library rep so now they'll be elected rather than appointed. We've changed things so that the meetings reflect what's in the constitution. We've changed the position to secret ballots so it's not defaulting to online ballots. Online votes take a lot of time to organise and mean that anyone who wasn't in the meeting can still vote which isn't quite as good. Secret ballots will default to paper. We've added the bar to the constitution. CCR have changed their positions. MCR have split some of the roles. We've updated the election schedule. Societies are now listed in proper order. We've got rid of sewing society. We have corrected some spelling, punctuation, grammar. It's now clear what is what within the document. To pass these changes we have to have a referendum as a paper ballot, in college on Monday, in the bar on Wednesday, and Margaret's on Thursday. Any questions? Is there a list of the changes? A list will go up in the morning

    Elections

    JWS Treasurer

    Candidates:

    • Katy McPhail
    • Beatrice Shelley

    Husting

Katy: This is rubbish. I'd like to be JWS treasurer. I think I'd be good as I have experience for how shops worked having worked in my dad's shop for 6 years. I think logically. I have an A-level in maths. I really want to serve college. Beatrice: I'd like to be JWS treasurer. The JWS t needs to be trustworth and responsible for the shop. I'm organised and systematic. I was manager last year. I know how it works which is really useful. I understand how important it is to have a close relationship with the managers. I was treasurer of orchestra last year. I'm aware of the dedication and have a lot of motivation. It'd mean a lot to me. I want to learn about and be responsible for running the financial side of the shop.

Hill vs. Bailey Rugby Match: read by James Gwinnett

For those who aren't aware; on weds there's a Hill vs. Bailey rugby match. Squads selected from all the teams. Myself paddy and Lister are representing Johns to raise money for a guy from Chad's paralysed from the neck down; he's going to be in hospital for a minimum of 45 months. If you haven't seen one of the forms come and see me and pledge some money. If you have, we're collecting money in the next few days. Any questions? Game's at 8 at DCRFC. All the money goes to Steve Cox from Chads. Thanks guys.

    CRC Referendum: Josh

I made it through JJ. (sigh) Just like to stress how important it is that everyone votes in the CRC changes. We need half of the JJCR to vote. That's over 250 people. We had so many late night meetings; please vote even if it's no. This is upsetting.referring to current lack of clothes bar a skirt and a gown

    Alumni Reps: Felix

A few weeks into last term, Sophie and I were elected Alumni reps. Now we're on the extended exec. We've organised a lot of events. It would be sad if this work were to be put to waste. However we have to offer our resignation to you. I would like to ask you not to accept it. Because all of this work would be wasted, as by the time someone's in the position it would be too late to finish the planning. We will put our extended exec commitments first., even if you ask us to step down tonight though we would still like this to happen. There's not that much more work involved from this point onwards. I'd like to ask you not to accept our resignation Rob Reeve: other than the tennis weekend what else is planned. The two smaller projects are firstly for the graduation pack we'd like to put a contact leaflet in. To remind people to sign up for a dunelm email address. Mainly work for awareness for alumni. Not many people are aware of the alumni system. Secondly, we were thinking of inviting people back to say hello to the Bish. We thought it would be nice for past generations to come back to say bye and thank you. I'm not promising anything though. Rachel James. Can I also request that the JJCR reject Sophie's resignation as DUCK treasurer. After exams there will not be much work. SG: we'll do that separately. Becca: can we take it on a general aye that we are not going to accept these resignations. Taken on a general aye SG. I'm DUCK treasurer; there's only one more term in office. Not too much will happen before exams anyway. Please reject it Taken on a general aye.

Hi I'm Ben. I would like to be your asst. estates. I want to see that formals run efficiently and smoothly. I will liaise with catering staff and Katie. I'm communal areas rep and I do the job to the best of my ability. I believe these skills would be transferable. I have worked towards the Open Days in March. I can handle pressure and balance it with my studies. I am very keen to get involved with some of Katie's ideas. If you have queries on my opinion about the curtains; don't ask. Just because I look like Ron Weasley, don't assume voting Ron is a vote for me! [laughter] Roddy Peters: will the candidate relinquish any other positions? Ben Salter: no Felix: (at Chair) You always ignore the exec! What other positions do you hold. BS: Only this. I'm running for Freshers' Rep if that's a problem. Tom: I'm standing for IT rep. It would be a really good way for me to give something abck to college. It's something I can enjoy. I've done a very similar thing before at school, liaising with technical and non technical people. I'm dedicated because I'll really enjoy it. Crucially I think I have the time., I'll be a second year theologian. I reckon I can find the time. It'll be hard work but I'm determined to give it my all. Ed McCarter on behalf of Mike: Doing these is difficult. It really comes down to... well... Mike isn't here. And he's not here for excellent reasons. Why we need him. Why he's awesome. This is really a job interview. It's a paid position. Many a time I've been trying to print stuff and there's no paper or the computer isn't working. Mike has a whole series of plans to deal with this because he is amazing! What do we want in an IT rep? Someone who is competent., knows all about computers. Mike knows everything about computers. He works in Windows and Linux and is pretty good with Macs. He deals with ITS as part of his physics course. I've seen him dealing with problems. And he makes you love your computer again. I've never known anyone like him to like computers. There's nothing he likes more than computers. He's like a doctor really. He's straight there. He deals with people. He likes computers. He's superbly competent. He's really keen. We want a human being and a computer expert. Social sec for the Durham physics society, so the most sociable physicist in Durham! He does Karate... Sophie Godfree: Time up! Ed McCarter: PLEASE!!!! Where will the candidate be living next year? TK: I'm living out EMC: Mike will be living in next year. If your new co-coordinator turned up to Freshers week with a different hair colour what would your response be. MT: send him to Toni and Guy. Peter Godden. What would be your initial reaction if listening to a rep's lionel richie tape you realised your signs had been taken down at 7am? MT: Funny you should mention that too? We cried a lot. Someone take them down. So probably stick nearer to the 7am mark so we're the last college on the M1. Rachel James. What if on the coach trip to newcastle, the coach pulled over for a toilet trip and left without a fresher. AC: we'd send him to Jeanna. Felix: Got a bit of a guest question... [shows video] Can the candidates act out a short scene from Romeo and Juliet, [you should know your shakespeare from school] AC as Juliet MT as Romeo. [laughter][applause] SG: any other questions? Matt Giles. When you're coordinator you have to do paperwork. Can you cope with the hours of filling in forms. AC; from English I'm used to ploughing through books. MT: we have quite wide experience of the various roles. Rob Reeve. If a rep was to break the two week rule, what would you do? [laughter] would you go for coffee with them MT: In our team it was kept to. It's good to protect the Freshers. Coffee's fine! Anything more, we'd come down hard on. The candidates were duly elected.
