Reports of Executive Officers

JCR President: Roddy Peters

Thanks for coming. Changes to the charities law, one of the biggest issues to affect JCR structure for many years, is about to hit us. At the moment are an exempt charity. We have gone to a meeting to take legal advice. We will keep you posted. House hunting: Prescom fought to move it back later, I hope those in the first year found that helped and that this year it went better than in the past. I’m trying to set up an advice night at DSU, with sessions on mortgages, how to buy a house, etc. If anyone wants anything else let me know. My DSU motion passed. Resources committee went very well this week. Members fund: we are looking at applications this weekend so come and see me or write me a letter if you want to apply.

VP- Estates: Jess Caddy

The contract signing for Margarets will be the 1st March when you need to give a £100 deposit. If you are thinking of Margarets but haven’t signed up, get in quickly. There has been a lot of unauthorised smoking, college will fine people and may close the Bailey room if it is a big problem. The bar overspill fire is being left on, don’t do it. If you have accommodation sorted for next year and are on the room ballot let me know. I have catering committee on Monday (the big glasses came after 2 terms of campaigning) if you have any ideas then e-mail me and I will represent you. The mattress we put a motion for last meeting, college are now paying for. Rachel James: What is the situation with postgrads and Margarets? Jess: That isn’t through me, go speak to college. James Tyrell: If you are in college next year, when is the contract signing? Jess: You get given a contract and you send it back. I think the end of the year. Lisa Moll: I signed my contract in September I think, so don’t worry about it but let the senior tutor’s secretary know you want to live in Margarets as a postgrad. Jess: The postgrad contract differs as it is a different contract, timewise.

VP-Welfare: Miquela Elsworth

Hello. First of all, thank you for everyone who came to the memorial service, I was really pleased to see many people there, thank you Diege for taking photos. The book is still around if people still want to sign it. Application advice workshop was really good, there was a tip sheet in This Week last week but if you want any more information then come and speak to me. Nightline training is this coming weekend, so for anyone interested in anything Welfare related it is really good, with issues from listening skills to dealing with a suicide. There have been Prebends bridge incidents again, its not ok to walk back in the dark girls.

Treasurer: Dan Baxter

All I have to say is that at this meeting I normally present the JCR accounts for the whole year but we had issues like the JCR computer dying earlier this term which means I will present them at the next meeting if there is no opposition. There being no opposition, this was taken on a general aye.

Senior DSU Rep: Jonny Hays

Hey everyone, firstly please congratulate the johns intercollegiate quiz team for their efforts. Go to WWW.VOTE.DSU.ORG.UK for sabbatical election votings. Just presidential, DUCK AND treasurer as EWO has been ruled out of order.

Services Manager: Hannah Sargeant

This Week Roddy and I met with people from Armstrong UK, a merchandise supplier. We had a problem with our previous supplier. We have decided to go with them as the embroidery and customer service is much better. Order forms will be in the bailey room over the weekend and hopefully everything will be well with that.

Social Secretary: Anna McMullen

The President’s banquet is now sold out. It’s next Friday, 645 in the SCR, wine is provided, there will be a bop later on. We are planning to have an AVON evening in a few weeks time, it will be funny!

Communications Officer: Rob Reeve

You may recall that last term we began to publish summary minutes from our exec. meetings online. This has proved a success so I am beginning to backtrack and post minutes from meetings earlier in the term. Check that out if you are interested. Otherwise I think everything has been ticking over in the world of Johns Comms.

Senior Bar Officer: Tim Quayle

Alcohol awareness week was a great success, we gave away lots of non alcoholic drinks. Non alcoholic cocktails are staying. The bar has been cleaned. We have an arrangement with NUSSLE who we buy our drinks from but we are looking into TUKO to see if it would be better for us. We will be beginning to sell wine at formals. We have election fever night in the bar on Tuesday with informal hustings. We are having a support staff event in the bar. We are looking to see if we can have a late license for the President’s Banquet. With the sourcing from NUSSLE/TUKO will you be looking at ethical issues (eg with NUSSLE)? TQ: Essentially it’s the licensees’ decision. With TUKO there is a lot more flexibility and we could possibly get products like fair-trade wine.

MCR President: Lisa Mol

We now have a VP Welfare, Emma Lloyd. She got elected 1.5 hours ago. We will have a surgery session next Tuesday for people interested in applying for a masters to explain to you what it is like to be a postgrad. Same for PhD meeting, it’s the 13th. Anyone thinking of applying for a PhD I may be able to help. Still working on intercollegiate board of MCR Presidents. We have a new website thanks to Roddy, dur.ac.uk/sj.mcr so have a look.

IT Rep: Josh Heald

Last term I talked about the possibility of getting wireless in the library. College will probably pay for that in consultation with ITS. The website will hopefully go online after the next JCR meeting if a motion for external hosting gets passed. Leon: What is the website at the moment? JH: This is a new site. Currently under ITS.

Tom Bristow: We have no balls in basketball. Sally: This was not passed at Finance Committee as there were questions that couldn’t be answered because the proposers were not present. Roddy: In the notes/believes you mention that you need a match ball, do you need match balls to practise or could you have 1 match ball and cheaper other balls? TB: You could have other cheaper balls but its always best to have 2. Basketballs can go Anna: Do you have a budget for the year? TB: £15. It is not worth increasing the budget every year. Roddy: What happens at the moment? TB: We use a combination of different people’s balls. For: 44 Against: 0 Abstain: 2 The motion was duly passed.

Motion for spending: Olav II

Roddy: This motion came last term, we wanted to look for cheaper options. We now can’t get one from America so there are two options, a £256 costume or a £100 6ft long cuddly toy from America. This harks back to the days when we had a proper stuffed alligator as a mascot. I did a DeVote and the winning option was the costume. Some people query that it may be too much money. Arun last meeting noted it was the same as a football team for a year, I said this is our profits being spent. It is up to you. At Bill Bryson’s arrival other colleges had mascots, we had a small soft toy. Rachel James: Will the costume fit everyone? Roddy: It will fit a range of people. There being no formal opposition the motion was passed on a general aye.

Husting

Felix: I’m sure you’ve spent hours reading the manifesto. We think we would enjoy doing this, we are up for the new position, involves getting in contact with old Johnians, sending them regular e-mails and organising a returners’ weekend. We could sell stash and get money off people who earn it. Leon: Do we not already have Lois Stukenbrook, why do we need the position? Roddy: I’d spoken to Lois when I created it, she does alumni and development. I thought it would be good for people to give fresh ideas to Lois every year and try and foster links with alumni from a student view. Partly because when I go and when we all go I want to keep in contact. It is to help. Anna: Will you organise a returners’ weekend? When? Felix: We want it to happen, but it depends on things like accommodation and how far people will come. It will depend on what people will do. Roddy: A lot of other colleges have a returners’ weekend but dates are up to them. Primarily targeted at the last three years. Lisa: Castle bombard me with stuff like that. They have 2 returners’ weekends, 1 for the last 5 years and 2 people more than 5 years with different cost bands (piss up or posh meal) Tom Bristow: Why do you feel it needs two people? Sophie: I think it would be more fun and we would get more done. I would be more motivated with it.

Matt: Alex isn’t here, she is ill. We have worked as CU reps before, we have both had roles involving editing. We think the role splits into two sections, coordinating the team itself and facilitating that. Making sure things are done within deadlines. We want to include a DVD with the yearbook so people can have messages and videos on it. Leon: Would the DVD increase the cost a lot? Matt: We would look at things and see. Roddy: What would the total cost be roughly? Matt: 12-14 Felix: POI mass printing DVDs is about £1.10
